It’s not as morbid as it sounds, but I often refer to my life before higher education as my past life. Beyond high school retail experience, all of my adult life profession was in the medical support field.
My first 8-to-5 job was in the Houston Medical Center, working in a physician’s group practice. I later worked in a surgeon’s office when a doctor from the group started his own surgical practice. Later still, I worked at a pain management clinic. Through these various roles in the medical profession, I learned genuine compassion for hurting people. I changed jobs from my many front desk/office manager roles in the medical field to managing medical expenses and billing. My new focus was to work with trust managers and their trustees to ensure accurate billing and request payment plans or adjustments. I think this is truly where my calling as an advocate really began to flourish.
I began my first local job here in the SETX area as an outpatient scheduler at a newly opened surgery center. As one of the founding team members, I was given a significant amount of input on the procedures followed related to surgery scheduling, insurance verification, and patient record file creation. Eventually, I had a team with whom I served as lead scheduler.
