MCFC Residency

What is Residency?

Residency is a face-to-face crucial component of the MCFC program. It is a 5-week course where students are required to attend a five-day on-campus residency. In Residency, students participate in learning modules, skill development, advising, and group projects. In Residency, students receive the Foundations of Marriage Couples and Family series and participate in basic counseling skills development.

Am I Ready to Take Residency?

Students are eligible for residency after they have successfully completed their first three courses in the program (5304, 5310, & 5311). However, some faculty advisors recommend waiting until students have completed several counseling program courses before applying to complete the residency requirement. These faculty advisors explain that completing residency just prior to beginning field experience is a good opportunity to review and practice the counseling skills you will be expected to use in the field experience classes (Practicum, Internship I, and Internship II) which are completed in your final three semesters.

Students are able to take residency in any semester they would like (after successful completion of the first three foundational courses) as long as they take it prior to applying for field experience, as it is a prerequisite. It is the student’s responsibility to choose which semester they would like to take residency and apply by the posted application deadline.

Here in the enrollment office, we want you to know that priority is given to students nearing field experience toward the end of the program. By following the course schedule/course rotation students can determine which part of each semester the residency course (CNDV 5380) will be offered.

As a reminder, you must apply for and be approved to take this course.

If you are ready to apply for residency, please look for Counseling program’s announcement within the LU Learn (Blackboard) program resources which is typically automatically sent via email to every enrolled MCFC student with the subject “Marriage, Couple, and Family Counseling program resources.”

Where do I find the Residency application?

  • LU Connect
    • LU Learn (Blackboard)
    • Organizations

    • Residency Resource Page
    • Residency Sign Up/Application

If you determine that you do not have the Marriage, Couple, and Family Counseling program resources course in your LU Learn (Blackboard) under organizations or courses, then you will want to email email the Counseling department with your name, L-number, LU Email, and request access to it since all communication and information about those previously listed requirements will be shared through that resource.

The Residency Information page on the Counseling department’s website includes a frequently asked questions section at the very bottom that may also prove to be helpful.
