Welcome to MCFC!

MCFC is an abbreviation for the Masters in Education Marriage, Couple, and Family Counseling program. The MCFC program consists of both five-week classes and full-semester advanced rotation classes. There is a residency class that requires students to come to campus for one week. Additionally, MCFC students experience face-to-face counseling contact hours through one practicum and two internship courses. Students are required to apply for residency, practicum, and internships in the semester before they wish to take them.

I am the professional staff advisor for the MCFC program within the University’s enrollment office. I handle mandatory advising holds, registration, and assist students with degree plan completion-related questions. Students also have an assigned faculty advisor who assists with curricular inquiries and program specifics such as practicum and internship.

I enroll students each semester according to the MCFC course schedule/course rotation.

The course rotation can be difficult to interpret so I will do my best to explain how to use this tool. On the course rotation locate the starting date from the college acceptance email and match it to the left most column.

MCFC students complete the first course CNDV 5304 Foundations of Professional Counseling in their first five-week session. Please note that there is a minimum grade requirement of B for the first three courses of the counseling program.

Moving over one column and down one row, where students complete the second course CNDV 5311 Individual Counseling Theories and Techniques in their second five-week session. Once again the minimum grade requirement is B.

Continue to move over one column and down one row to find the third course CNDV 5310 Counseling Skills which is completed in the third five-week session with a minimum grade of B.

Once the first three foundational course are successfully completed with the B or better grade requirement, students once again move over one column and down one row to the “core carousel” column. Unlike the first three courses, students continue down this column until all of the listed classes are successfully completed (notice they begin to repeat). Students need to ensure that they do not miss any of these five-week courses as it can be many semesters before they are offered again. Students are allowed up to two C grades in the course of the MCFC program’s completion, provided that students maintain a 3.0 or higher GPA. Student who have earned three or more C grades should contact the enrollment office to plan for repeating coursework in order to maintain graduation eligibility.

After the first four to seven classes are completed, students should begin familiarizing themselves with the application process for the five day on-campus counseling skills lab CNDV 5380 – Residency/Seminar* in Counseling and Development.

As students near completion the core carousel, they move into the advanced rotation area of the course rotation. The advanced rotation courses are full-semester long classes that are typically completed with their corresponding Field Experience courses* (Practicum and Internship I/II) as follows:

  • CNDV 5326 Addiction Counseling with CNDV 5393 Practicum*
  • CNDV 5327 Psychopathology & Basic Psychopharmacology with CNDV 5494 Internship I*
  • CNDV 5329 Assessment & Treatment with CNDV 5394 Internship II*

*application/approval required

The stair step progression continues until all of the program coursework has been completed. Students all begin with CNDV 5304 and end with CNDV 5394 B.

The Counseling Department and University provide course descriptions and past syllabi for review.
